Early years: UK tops pre-school spending league

The UK is the world's biggest spender on pre-primary education, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The organisation's Education at a Glance 2005: OECD Indicators reportexamined the performance of, and spending on, education systems acrossthe globe and found that the UK spent the most per child on pre-schooleducation.

The UK spent an average of US$8,452 per child compared to theaverage of US$4,294 spent by the OECD's 30 member countries. Thiswas described as "remarkable" since participation in pre-schooleducation in the UK has increased from 51 per cent in 1998 to 77 percent in 2002.

But Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day NurseriesAssociation, said it should be remembered that UK parents pay more foreducation than in most other European countries.
