Early years: Child funding must be made simpler

A leading figure in the early years sector has called for the Government to scrap existing funding arrangements.

Speaking at last week's National Day Nurseries Association's nationalconference in Leeds, chief executive Purnima Tanuku said: "Why do wehave four streams: the Transformation Fund; working tax credit; thechildcare vouchers scheme; and the free entitlement? We're asking theGovernment to move to one, simple funding channel."

Delegates called for the working tax credit to be paid directly tonurseries. But Graham Archer, deputy director for childcare at theDepartment for Education and Skills, said such a move was unlikely.
