Early years: Advice planned on touching

Guidance on the appropriate touching of children in early years settings could be on the way thanks to a partnership between disability charity Scope and the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA).

At last week's NDNA annual conference, Scope's education adviser LindsayBrewis called for a paper giving clear advice and guidance on whatconstitutes appropriate touching.

"Having a no-touching policy in settings is actually against the law,and being touched appropriately is a fundamental human right," she said."Staff need training, guidance and support on the appropriate touchingof children."

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the NDNA, said the association wouldbe looking to work with Scope to produce with guidelines. "We're verypositive about it," she said. "There is a lot of confusion about whatyou actually can do when it comes to appropriate touching of children."
