Early learning targets missed

Early Years
One in seven children in England are not achieving early learning goals in writing, according to government figures.

The Foundation Stage Profile figures for 2007/08, released last week, also showed only 38 per cent of children from deprived areas were "working securely within" the government's early learning goals, compared to 54 per cent elsewhere.

This 16 per cent gap falls short of the government's target of a 12 per cent gap that was set in 2004.

It also showed a slight narrowing of the gap between the lowest achieving 30 per cent of children and all other children on meeting the government's goals for writing.

In 2006/07, the gap was 37 per cent, while in 2007/08 this fell to 36 per cent.
