Government fails to meet targets for under fives

Education
Latest figures from DCSF show one in seven under fives still can't write their name properly, while targets to close the gap of achievement between children from deprived areas and the rest of England have not been met.

The Foundation Stage Profile Results, providing information on achievement outcomes across the UK at the end of the Foundation Stage in 2008, show that 14 per cent of children are still working towards their Early Learning Goals in the writing strand of Communication, Language and Literacy - which includes writing your name and structuring a sentence.

In a third of the most deprived areas in England, 38 per cent of children managed a good level of achievement overall, compared to 54 per cent in the rest of the UK, leaving a gap of 16 per cent. This means the figure has not changed since a target of 12 per cent was set by the Government in 2004.
