Ealing Common Day Nursery, London

1 min read Early Years Health
A local community dental nurse recently visited Ealing Common Day Nursery and taught the children about the importance of keeping their teeth and gums healthy, as part of the nursery's Profession Month.

The children learned how to brush their teeth properly, and dressed up as dentists before carrying out some check-ups on each other. This helped them to better understand what they need to do to maintain good health. They also had an oversized pair of chattering teeth to play with.

What is the month all about? The Profession Month aims to teach the children about different roles adults have, how to identify professions such as police officers and lollipop men and women, and, of course, dentists. It enables children to understand how they can help and gives them a chance to act out some role plays.

What are the benefits? The visit from the dentist is an important lesson in promoting health and fulfils a number of Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. It demonstrates how practitioners can work together across services within the community. It also allows the children to understand their natural environments by interacting with people in real-life situations.
