Drugs: Treatment must not ignore crack

The Crack Report states that, while addiction figures are relatively low, twice as many 10- to 24-year-old crack users exist in the UK as heroin users. But treatment centres are more focused on heroin.

Richard Kramer, head of policy at Turning Point, said: "Because heroin treatment has been working, dealers are deliberately using new marketing tactics to push the drug, such as offering a two-for-one deal for a rock of crack with heroin." The National Treatment Agency last week revealed that the percentage of young clients using drug treatment services fell from 35 per cent in 2002-03 to 29 per cent in 2003-04. The fall may be a result of a change in measurement criteria, said a spokesman.
