Drugs: Action teams hurt by lack of funding

1 min read

Although the 2006-07 budget of 394.6m is an increase of over 30 per cent, a 42 per cent increase had been agreed in the 2004 government spending review.

This has raised questions about funding for 2007-08, when a further increase was planned. The 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review should set out how drug action teams will be financed beyond then.

Martin Barnes, chief executive of DrugScope, said: "There will be disappointment that the increase is less than planned, but given Department of Health pressure it should be supported."

The money will be spent on staffing and other running costs, new buildings and refurbishment. A large portion is expected to be spent on young people, although only 24.6m is specifically set aside for this purpose.
