Domestic Violence: Teachers urged to take an active role

Teachers have been urged to play a more active role in preventing domestic violence and supporting children who are affected.

The National Union of Teachers has suggested ways that teachers can address the issue in new guidance for schools. It has also said that all teachers with responsibility for child protection should receive training that is regularly updated to fulfil their responsibilities.

General secretary Steve Sinnott said: "While there are no set symptoms displayed by children who witness domestic violence, the impact on their behaviour can be dramatic. Absenteeism, bullying, anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol misuse, and self harm can all result."
