Domestic violence policies focus primarily on the needs of the adults on the receiving end of attacks. Joe Lepper examines the policies across the UK for children and young people who may be affected by such abuse.

ENGLAND

Domestic violence costs the lives of at least two women each week, according to the Home Office's national plan on the issue. Released three years ago, the plan is backed by £14m and sets out measures to cut domestic violence and protect children in England. Measures include a free 24-hour helpline, funding for more refuge places and support for children who have witnessed domestic violence.

The national plan has been backed up with legislation, including the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004.

Courts have greater powers to impose restraining orders and domestic violence murder cases are reviewed by local multi-agency teams to see what can be learned.
