
The three-year-initiative, which aims to help 250 children each year across Greater London, will involve financial grants, as well as emotional support.
Unlike many traditional domestic violence programmes that focus on the needs of the parent, it will emphasise support for children who witness abuse, addressing their specific needs.
The project will provide support to rehouse victims, replace household assets and help to rebuild a home, as well as provide continuing support to deal with the mental health and behavioural problems that can be caused by the trauma.
Buttle UK points to research by Scottish Women’s Aid which found that moving home has a dramatic impact on children – leading to anxiety, trouble sustaining friendships, missing periods of school, and leaving behind things that were familiar to them.
