Discrimination: Religious groups must follow law

The call came as the employment tribunal involving gay youth worker John Reaney - who has alleged that the Bishop of Hereford, Anthony Priddis, blocked his appointment because of his sexuality - continued in Cardiff.

A spokesman for Stonewall said: "The dispute is an important test case. It follows from the 2003 employment equality regulations, where there is a narrow exemption for organised religion. The Church of England is seeking to widen the scope of exemption, but we don't think youth work should be included."

A spokeswoman for the Diocese of Hereford said the Bishop has denied any "unlawful discrimination."
