EDUCATION NEWS: Human rights - NUT fights flaws in discrimination law

The country's biggest teaching union has criticised the Government for leaving a loophole in new laws intended to cut discrimination in employment against gays and lesbians.

The National Union of Teachers says regulations about how the law should be implemented make it possible for religious schools to take a stand against employing gay or lesbian staff.

"The regulations leave it open for a school to argue that its religious practice precludes accepting teachers who are gay or lesbian," said John Bangs, head of education at the NUT.

Otherwise the NUT welcomed the new laws because they would help reduce homophobic bullying in schools, said Bangs. The laws prohibit discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or religion and came into effect last month (3 December).
