Faith-based: Gay youth worker wins tribunal case

A landmark tribunal ruling should end discrimination against gay people in church youth work projects, according to equality charity Stonewall.

Youth worker John Reaney is set to receive substantial compensation following a ruling that the Church of England discriminated against him because of his sexual orientation.

The Bishop of Hereford blocked Reaney’s appointment as youth officer in his diocese after questioning him about a previous gay relationship. Rea-ney had emerged as the outstanding candidate for the job.

A spokesman for Stonewall said: If someone applies for an equivalent post, the Church cannot discriminate. It still has some leeway as far as religious posts are concerned but if it is a lay post, then a person’s sexuality should have no bearing.

Reaney approached Stonewall Cymru in Cardiff for advice after his appointment was blocked, and his case was funded by Stonewall.
