Research by social justice organisation Stonewall shows that nearly half of all lgb people under 18 report harassment by other students, and a shocking 53 per cent of these victims consider self-harm or suicide because of this bullying. Coupled with the fact that a third of lgb young people feel forced to leave home after their sexuality becomes known to their family, this means that many are susceptible to a raft of emotional and practical problems, and poor self-esteem.
Growing up with prejudice
John Paul Fitzpatrick, Scotland's first dedicated local authority youth wor-ker with lgb and transgender young people, explains: "These young people can feel marginalised and have to come to terms with their sexuality in a prejudicial society. Specialist groups can provide them with support."
