Disability: Whizz-Kidz opens mobility centre

Whizz-Kidz, the charity that provides mobility equipment for disabled children, has opened a mobility centre in Birmingham.

The centre - which is the second to be opened by the charity followingthe launch of its Newcastle centre in 2003 - will provide customisedmobility equipment, training and advice for more than 220 children inits first year.

Whizz-Kidz chose Birmingham as the location because the West Midlandshas a higher than average population of disabled children - six per centcompared with the national average of five.

Alexandra Strick, project manager of the Newcastle and Birminghamcentres, said the Birmingham centre would be a source of "impartialadvice and information" for parents and would "empower" children to maketheir own decisions.

The centre is largely funded by Vodafone UK, which will provide 70,000 per year for three years.
