The Prime Minister's Strategy Unit wants the Department for Education and Skills to ensure that all families with a disabled child have access to quality childcare. This comes a week after the Equal Opportunities Commission said the Government's 10-year strategy had failed to address the issue (Children Now, 19-25 January).
The unit has also insisted that all national evaluations of children's services must make a clear assessment of the impact on families with disabled children. And it has called for disabled children and their families to have "timely access to the equipment they need".
The proposals are contained in a 20-year strategy for improving the life chances of disabled people, published last week. The Children's Society and the Council for Disabled Children both welcomed the strategy.
