Disability: Charities join up to push for change

Government policy is systematically failing disabled children and their families, according to four campaigning organisations that launched a major push for change this week.

Contact a Family, the Council for Disabled Children, Mencap, and theSpecial Educational Consortium, have joined forces for the EveryDisabled Child Matters campaign, which was launched at the LiberalDemocrat conference this week.

The three-year campaign will highlight failings in Governmentpolicy.

"Every Child Matters has done very good things for children generallybut disabled children are missing out," said campaign manager SteveBroach.

"There is evidence that disabled children have not benefited to the sameextent as other children from Sure Start."

The campaign hopes to get at least 10,000 people to back its 20objectives through its web site, which goes live on 26 September.
