DISABILITY: Birmingham site aids web access

1 min read

Chatrooms and message boards are complemented by educational games that help children with computer skills.

The web site has links to other sites with information about activities and support available in Birmingham for disabled children and their families.

Brumability.com is designed to promote learning and improve accessibility by allowing young users to change the background and foreground colours of the site. It uses Makaton symbols - a picture-based communication tool - in addition to text, to help users navigate.

Commissioned by the Birmingham Children's Fund, the site is supported by children and young people's charity NCH and Birmingham City Council.

Richard Ives, managing partner of computer education firm educari, which designed the site, said: "Access to the web can be really difficult for disabled children. If you are visually impaired, some sites will be impossible to navigate. If you have a learning disability, you may not understand a lot of the text."
