Diploma pledge is 'crackers'

Education
The general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders has hit out at the government for setting unrealistic targets for the diploma.

Speaking at a Children's Services Network conference last week, John Dunford claimed that the government's pledge to offer all young people access to every diploma is "absolutely crackers".

By September 2011, there will be 17 diplomas on offer, each at foundation, higher and advanced level. That means every young person should have access to 51 diploma courses.

Dunford said: "It's crazy, it's going to be really difficult in rural areas."

However, a spokeswoman for the Department for Children, Schools and Families dismissed Dunford's claims. She said: "We are confident all schools and colleges will be ready to deliver diplomas when they are available."
