Diploma not meeting the needs of all young people

The diploma qualification has failed to meet the needs of all young people during its first year of delivery, a survey of more than 130 colleges has found.

The survey, conducted by the Association of Colleges, highlights particular concerns over the one year higher diploma, which some respondents found to be too difficult for those who failed to achieve five A*-C GCSE grades at school, the main group of students it is aimed at.

The association said the diploma "is better suited to meet the needs of more able students".

It added: "Schools and colleges are reluctant to accept learners with average or below average prior attainment on to diplomas, with the result that a number of young people cannot access the diploma and may need an alternative learning route."
