Diabetes: Campaigners call for paediatric focus

Campaigners have called for a greater focus on services for diabetic children after a review of the diabetes national service framework failed to highlight a single example of good practice.

Although the review, which assessed progress made since the launch of the framework two years ago, acknowledged that children's diabetic care was a challenging area, no mention was made in the bulk of the paper.

Bridget Turner, head of healthcare and policy at Diabetes UK, said the framework had raised the profile of paediatric diabetes. But she said there had "not been a lot of progress in sorting out delivery in diabetes paediatric units".

She said the main problems concerned the lack of consultants, nurses and dieticians trained in paediatric diabetic care.
