Letter: Diabetes care for children

Diabetes is a serious condition that affects more than 20,000 children and young people in the UK. Diabetes UK is calling for urgent improvements to care for children and young people with diabetes.

As part of our campaign to improve paediatric care, we have released anonline resource that brings together guidance from many organisations onbest practice for the care of children and young people withdiabetes.

Shortcomings in current standards of care include the fact thatpaediatric diabetes specialist nurses are overstretched with an averagecaseload of more than 100 children each while we recommend a caseload ofno more than 70 for each specialist nurse.

Diabetes UK wants to make sure children and young people with diabetesreceive the best possible specialised care and support. Our onlineresource is yet another awareness-raising tool and we hope it will helpsupport young people, their carers, and professionals to lobby for thebest quality care, and encourage practitioners to share goodpractice.
