Devon puts young people in charge

1 min read Youth Work
Devon Youth Service is to place five per cent of its budget in the hands of young people, as part of changes to the way services are funded.

More than £200,000 a year will go directly to young people from next April.

The cash is coming from Local Youth Networks, which are given funding to commission youth work activity from local voluntary sector groups. The networks are being restructured, and will no longer have a commissioning budget.

Dillon Hughes, principal youth officer in Devon, said the changes are in line with central government aims. "The money would relate to the five per cent of our budget that we will be required to give to young people by 2011 under the 10-year youth strategy," he said.

The funding changes come at the same time as Devon County Council has asked its Children and Youth Services Directorate to cut expenditure by three per cent a year. The council is also proposing to integrate services such as the youth service, Connexions, and youth offending service.
