DETACHED YOUTH WORK: Conference outlines low profile of work

1 min read

Speaking at the Federation of Detached Youth Work's annual conference, Doug Nicholls, general secretary of the union, warned that detached youth work's low profile had left it as a "sub-profession".

Nicholls said that detached youth work was increasingly left out of social policy documents and was ignored in the Government's recent green paper.

Fellow speakers at the conference supported the view. Tom Wylie, The National Youth Agency chief executive, told delegates that short-term funding threatened detached youth work, as did the failure of it to be seen as a distinct methodology.

The conference also saw the release of the latest draft of the federation's guidance on detached youth work. The federation expects to issue the final version by this time next year.
