Design award for London centre

A children's centre in London has scooped a national design award.

William Bellamy Children's Centre in Barking received the highly commended award in the Inspiring Design - Early Years category at the British Council for School Environments' first awards for best practice in UK design and construction of schools.

The competition saw more than 140 entries across 15 categories, covering key areas of the design, building and equipping of schools. The winners were announced at a ceremony at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United Football Club, on 12 February. Entries were also received from architects, building contractors, local authorities and individual schools.

Judges included Mukund Patel, head of the building and design unit at the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
