Daily roundup 2 June: Sleeping pills, school uniform and reading

1 min read
Increase in number of children in Wales prescribed sleeping pills; school tells parents they must buy branded uniforms; and survey finds black and Asian children enjoying reading more than white children, all in the news today.

Hundreds of children are being treated for sleep problems in Wales, with the number being prescribed medication rising by 20 per cent in the last three years. Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by BBC Wales found at least 408 children have been admitted to hospitals across Wales suffering from sleep disorders since March 2013. Last year 640 under-18s received prescriptions, up 19.8 per cent on 2013.

Parents have criticised a decision by a school that pupils must wear branded uniforms that cost £18 - even though an almost identical outfit can be bought at Tesco for just £4. The Sun reports that Tor Bridge High School in Estover, Plymouth, has said from September, if pupils don't wear the correct trousers and skirts they will be put in detention.

Black and Asian children enjoy reading more than white children, a study by the National Literacy Trust has found. The Telegraph reports that 25 per cent of white children involved in the survey of 42,406 pupils aged eight to 18 said that they "very much" enjoy reading, compared with 27.8 per cent of black respondents and 28.2 per cent of Asian children.

The number of children being held in secure children's homes has fallen slightly. Department for Education statistics how that as on 31 March there were 203 children accommodated in secure children's homes in England and Wales, a decrease from 210 last year.

A nanny who shook a 10-month-old boy to death "in a fit of anger" has been jailed for four years. The BBC reports that Viktoria Tautz, 34, was caring for Joshua Paul at his home in Haringey, north London, when he suffered "catastrophic brain and spinal injuries". Joshua was rushed to hospital but died three days later.
