
A lack of careers advice is stopping young people getting out of poverty in Wales, an education expert has warned. The BBC reports that just 1.3 per cent of school leavers went into workplace training programmes, such as apprenticeships, last year. Professor David Egan of Cardiff School of Education said it was a "national disgrace" that children were not given the chance to get out of poverty.
A director of children's services is facing the sack for serious misconduct. The Manchester Evening News reports that Mark Carriline appeared before a disciplinary hearing this week after he and council chief executive, Mike Owen, were found to have "deliberately" delayed carrying out child protection procedures when a councillor was accused of indecent child image offences. A panel has concluded Mr Carriline was guilty of serious misconduct and has recommended he be dismissed without notice.
Around 30 boys have worn skirts to school in protest at being told they were not allowed to wear shorts. The BBC reports that pupils from ISCA Academy in Exeter asked permission to modify their uniform because of the hot weather. Head teacher Aimee Mitchell said shorts were "not part" of the school uniform.
Parents should let their children snack on crisps instead of raisins because they are better for their teeth, dental experts have said. The Daily Mail reports that the stickiness of raisins has the effect of "gluing sugar to the teeth", according to dentists.
Children experiencing bullying and harassment in Scottish schools are targeted on the basis of physical appearance, sexuality and identity, and the presence of an additional support need, a report by Children in Scotland has found. The report identifies protective factors such as good relationships, peer support and strong participation mechanisms to ensure children and young people are listened to.
