
Schools are to pilot improved measures to support children's early development in language and vocabulary in reception year, it has been announced. The Department for Education said that from September, 25 schools across the country will trial revised Early Learning Goals, the measures teachers use to decide how prepared children are to begin year 1 at the end of reception year. The DfE said the changes are aimed at reducing teachers' workload to free up more time to support children's early skills and produce engaging lessons.
Pupils secretly taking pictures up teachers' skirts and posting them on social media is becoming more of a problem, a teaching union has warned. The BBC reports that the issue was raised at NASUWT Cymru's conference being held in Wrexham. Sion Amlyn, a national executive member of the union, said it was seeing an increase in the number of reports of pupils "upskirting".
One in four under the age of two and more than a third of three- to five-year-olds have their own tablet, research has found. The Telegraph reports that toddlers' use of apps, websites and the internet has increased to such an extent that the average pre-school child, including under-twos, spends more than an hour a day online, rising to two hours or more a day for a third of five- to six-year-olds, according to a government-commissioned study.
An average of 20 children in care are reported missing in Scotland each day, it has emerged. The Daily Record reports that 7,600 cases involving looked-after and accommodated young people were recorded in the past year, five per cent more than in 2016/17, according to police figures.
