
Ofsted chief inspector Amanda Spielman wants to tackle schools that prioritise exam results over giving children a well-rounded education. Spielman said the inspectorate will closely monitor schools that place bolstering their exam league table position over children's all-round learning, reports the Guardian.
Wales is facing a teacher recruitment crisis, union leaders have warned Welsh Government figures showed the target for trainee teacher intake in secondary schools and for PGCEs had both been missed in 2015/16. Owen Hathway, Wales policy officer for the NUT, told the BBC the pressures and stresses of the job were putting people off entering the profession.
Latest figures from Barnardo's shows the children's charity supported record numbers of young people last year. It saw a rise in the numbers being supported through its children's centres, missing children service and victims of child sexual exploitation. In 2016/17 it worked with 272,000 children, young people and parents - 24,000 more than the previous year.
Early intervention charity Chance UK has appointed Geethika Jayatilaka as its new chief executive. Jayatilaka will take over from Gracia McGrath in September. She is currently director at Parent Gym and has previously worked for 4Children, been a school governor and Camden councillor.
A report by Localis for Impower calls for reform of the children's mental health system to ensure more support is available for young people who do not meet thresholds for specialist treatment. It concludes that current child and adolescent mental health services are failing to support young people to develop resilience.
Public Health England has published three pieces of research on the wellbeing of young people. Reports on self-harm, cyberbullying and the emotional wellbeing of adolescent girls have been compiled using data from the Health Behaviour in School-age Children index.
