
The Education committee has launched an inquiry into underachievement in education by white working class children. Issues it will be considering include the extent of underachievement of white working class pupils, the factors behind this, what is being done by schools to address the problem and the role that government can play. Submissions need to be made by 30 September.
More than a quarter of 16- to 19-year-olds visited an NHS contraception clinic in 2012, the Association for Young People’s Health reports. The statistic is included in a collection of data about young people’s lives published in a report by the organisation. Key Data on Adolescence 2013 includes information on young people’s living arrangements, health and opinions.
Mothers smoking during pregnancy can lead to bad behaviour in children, researchers have said. The Daily Mail reports that analysis of three existing studies from New Zealand, the United States and Wales found that the risk of antisocial behaviour rose among children whose mothers smoked. They were more likely to have poor attention spans and show disruptive behaviour such as ADHD.
