Conservative Party Conference: Pupil wellbeing distracts from teaching

1 min read
The shadow minister for schools has launched a scathing attack on government reforms to make schools responsible for pupils' wellbeing.

At a fringe event entitled Schools for the 21st Century, Nick Gibb toldCYP Now: "The role of schools is to be effective in learning. It isparents who look after children."

He warned that while teachers had a "professional duty" to assist withchildren's problems, the preoccupation with wellbeing would "divertschools' ability to teach and in the long-term damage their pupils'economic wellbeing".

Bene't Steinberg, group director of public affairs at exam boardCambridge Assessment, echoed the criticisms: "Schools shouldn't besocial services, they should be schools."

At the event Gibb urged the party to challenge the "educationalorthodoxy" that held that children don't need to be taught bytraditional methods. He said most parents want their children taught bya teacher standing at the front of a classroom.
