Conservative conference: Pledge to boost childminder numbers in EYFS review

1 min read Early Years
A Conservative government would prioritise the revival of childminder numbers when the Early Years Foundation Stage is reviewed in November 2010, shadow families minister Maria Miller has pledged.

The number of registered childminders had diminished by 40 per cent over past few years, she said, attributing the decline in part to childminders being driven out by "bureaucratic burdens".

"I thoroughly support anything that is about quality... but serious questions need to be asked about the impact of EYFS," Miller told Conservative conference fringe event, Childcare for the next generation.

"It has had a number of unintended consequences, the biggest being the decline in childminders. A critical part of the review will be to address that."

Miller also expressed concern that Montessori settings, which she said had a good record of early years care, were finding it difficult to accommodate the curriculum. "Any curriculum that some of the best providers have to opt out of needs to be examined," she said.
