Conservative conference: Bigger role for voluntary sector in running Sure Start

1 min read Early Years
Shadow minister for families Maria Miller has signalled that a Conservative government would seek to give the voluntary sector a bigger role in running Sure Start children's centres.

At a Conservative conference fringe meeting on family relationships, Miller said: "The role of the voluntary sector in Sure Start could be more promoted. I find it interesting that more voluntary organisations don't run Sure Start centres.

"The challenge is how we build capacity in the voluntary sector to get more organisations involved in the management and running of children's centres."

She said the voluntary sector was better equipped to reach out to vulnerable families. Miller added the challenge would be to "capture this expertise and emotional equity to make Sure Start better and more powerful".

Insisting the party is "100 per cent committed to Sure Start", she added: "I see Sure Start as a fulcrum for delivering services for families. I see it as an opportunity for everyone to come together."
