Labour conference: Teaching union leader attacks academies programme

National Union of Teachers (NUT) general secretary Christine Blower has launched a scathing attack on the academies programme and Labour's record on educating the most deprived children.

At Labour conference fringe event Labour Education Policy – A Fair Chance for All?, Blower said: "The single thing we have found utterly dispiriting is this obsession with academies, taking schools out of local authority control."

She claimed academies would fail to bring about an education system that was sustainable, democratic or equal.

"In this country, education more closely relates to parental income and postcode than anywhere else in the OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] or any developed country," the union chief added.
