Conservative conference: Teaching union chief slams Tory education stance

The general secretary of teaching union NASUWT has hit out at shadow schools minister Nick Gibb after he announced that a Conservative government would "break the monopoly of state education".

Speaking at a Conservative Party Conference fringe event on the future of state education, Chris Keates said she was "deeply disappointed" by the Tory approach to schooling, which advocates introducing a diverse range of schools, from new vocational technical colleges to primary academy schools.

"I believe that this comment will strike fear for the future into the hearts of teachers and parents alike", she warned, "Where is the evidence that academies do better than community schools? Where is the evidence that private and other providers offer value for tax payer's money? Where is the evidence that importing models of education from other countries such as Finland and Sweden raises standards?"
