The Wheels 2 Work initiative was awarded 40,000 from the Countryside Agency, with a further 10,000 coming from Cumbria County Council.
Part of the money has been used to purchase a fleet of 15 purple 50cc scooters to help young people living in the rural areas around Copeland.
Young people will be able to access the 1,100 scooters from storage in Whitehaven after their needs have been assessed by local Connexions personal advisers. The criteria for gaining a six-month loan of a scooter include personal circumstances and how far the young person needs to travel.
Wheels 2 Work is also running the scooter initiative with four other Connexions partnerships, in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset; Coventry and Warwickshire; Lincolnshire and Rutland; and Cornwall and Devon.
