CONNEXIONS: Connexions opens its doors

Two years ago, the Government set aside 240 million to establish the Connexions service, and join up youth services throughout England. Dipika Ghose finds out whether the controversial initiative is on target

Connexions is Tony Blair's Big Idea for providing services to young people in England. Two years ago, he committed the Government to the roll-out of 47 Connexions partnerships by April 2003, allocating 240 million to the initiative, which is aimed at ensuring all 13 to 19-year-olds are engaged in either education, training or employment.

And broadly, the Government looks set to hit its target for the roll-out, with the final partnership due to go live in Northumberland in April.

But many of these partnerships, even those that have been established for two years, are still recruiting staff, establishing cooperation with other organisations and setting up Connexions access points.
