CONNEXIONS DIRECT: The Direct Approach

Connexions has 47 partnerships, but not everyone wants to discuss issues in person. John Plummer finds out about an alternative way of doing things.

Connexions Direct is aimed at 13 to 19-year-olds who are uncomfortable talking about problems face to face with a personal adviser (PA).

Instead, it enables them to telephone, email, web chat or text a call centre in Newcastle manned by advisers available 18 hours a day, 365 days a year.

For young people, Connexions Direct will become the largest source of anonymous help in the country. Its impact will be felt just as keenly by other organisations running helplines targeting the same age group.

Sharing the same remit

Despite their different approaches, Connexions Direct and Connexions partnerships share the same Government remit to get more young people into education, employment or training. But, since confidentiality is at the heart of Connexions Direct, it is not subject to the same performance measures. Connexions Direct manager Anne Lidster says: "We are driven by how many young people we can help."
