Connexions: Ant and Dec tipped to be first patrons

The pair have attracted more than 40 per cent of votes since the race began in January, making them clear favourites to represent young Connexions users.

Nearly 10,000 votes have been cast by young people across England in the web-based poll, in which Ant and Dec are fending off competition from TV presenter Vernon Kaye and pop star Jamelia.

Carolyn Caldwell, executive director of the National Association of Connexions Partnerships, said: "We were surprised and pleased at the good response.

It's obviously caught the imagination of young people."

The voting closes at the end of this month, after which the association will approach the winners and ask them to be patrons.
