The decision is a major step forward from the line taken in Youth Matters, which went no further than encouraging local authorities to preserve the brand, after they take over responsibility for commissioning guidance services from next year.
Partnerships have been told in a briefing note that ministers have decided to compel authorities to keep the brand to ensure a consistent understanding about what Connexions services provide.
Carolyn Caldwell, executive director of the National Association of Connexions Partners, said: "It's important that the Government continues to have standards and a way of enforcing those standards."
