Conflict resolution: Residential helps with race relations

Relations between Pakistani and Somali young people in Sheffield have improved after youth workers ran a conflict resolution programme.

Youth workers from Sheffield Futures held a two-day residential in Cumbria where Somali young people from the Broomhall area joined Pakistani young people from Nether Edge to learn how to break down barriers between their communities. Earlier this year, a dispute between young people from the two communities flared up at a community day held in the city.

Six young people from each community attended the residential at the YMCA national activity centre at Lakeside.

Alyas Khan, a youth worker behind the event, said: "The young people who attended were key characters in the conflict. But since the residential, good relations have continued."
