Police urged to improve relations with young people

A report on gun and knife crime has called for improved relations between police and young people.

Standing Together, published by 11 Million, sets out 10 principles on gun and knife crime, exploring risk factors, parenting support, education, support for victims, interventions and sentencing.

The report calls for better understanding of the causes of offending and parenting support for families, featuring education about the risks, dangers and consequences of carrying weapons.

It also states the need to reduce the fear of gun and knife crime among children and young people and calls for penalties and sentences for gun and knife offences to be designed to reduce reoffending.

Sir Al Aynsley-Green, the children's commissioner for England, said good relations between police and young people can be key.
