Trip calms interracial tensions between Sheffield young people

A residential trip set up by youth workers has reduced conflict between Pakistani and Somali young people in Sheffield.

The two-day stay in the Lake District was organised after simmering tensions between the two groups exploded during an open day at Sheffield United's football ground earlier this year.

Zain Abdulla, senior youth worker at Sheffield Futures - the city's youth and careers service, said a "misunderstanding" between Pakistani young people from the Nether Edge area and young Somalis in Broomhall had escalated, with verbal abuse exchanged on social networking websites such as Bebo.

The trip, funded by South Yorkshire Police Authority, saw six young people stay at the YMCA's national activity centre in Lakeside, Cumbria. During their stay the young Pakistanis and Somalis learned how to respect each other's culture and explored the reasons behind their conflict.
