Community projects: Hackney teenagers organise arts event

Young people in Hackney staged an event to celebrate local arts and to tackle youth issues last month.

The One Hackney event was organised by the Hackney North East Youth Forum and took place at BSix sixth form college.

Alongside dance, comedy and music, more serious issues were raised. Police were invited to give a discussion about stop and search and explained young people's rights. They also ran a personal safety workshop and the youth offending team ran a workshop on knife awareness.

Karl Winter, Hackney partnership inspector, said: "It's fantastic that the initiative originated from young people. To my knowledge this is the first event in the borough which is peer-led and peer-directed."
