Community Champions Fund

1 min read
What it is: The Community Champions Fund is a Department for Children, Schools and Families initiative that provides support for individuals who want to set up small-scale community projects. The scheme has been running since 1999 and is due to close in March 2008. Community champions are defined as people who have a commitment to supporting other members of their communities and who are keen to develop their own skills, and those of others.

How much is on offer: Each year nine regional offices share £3m. The minimum grant is £50 and the maximum £2,000.

What it will fund: The fund is keen to support those who would otherwise find it hard to access funding. It believes in risk taking through encouraging innovative approaches to working and by supporting people who have limited experience of leading projects.

Applications will be assessed on the opportunities they provide to both the community and the "champion". Preference will be given to applicants who want to work in deprived areas, or with socially excluded people.

Who can apply: Eight of the nine regional offices are currently open for applications. Funding in London has now closed.
