Commissioner: Shortlist is drawn up for English post

The children's commissioner for England post attracted 144 applicants, Children Now can reveal.

The Department for Education and Skills is understood to have drawn up a shortlist of candidates and interviews are taking place this week.

Insiders said that possible contenders for the job included former education secretary Estelle Morris and Lancaster & Wyre MP Hilton Dawson.

According to the advert the department is looking for "a highly visible and informed presence who can make direct contact with diverse groups of children and young people".

The children's commissioners from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland last week reiterated concerns over the role of the English commissioner in non-devolved policy areas.
