England is finally establishing a children's commissioner. But with little freedom to act, what will the role actually involve?

I'm trying to decide what being a children's commissioner might involve.

In the best-case scenario, children and young people.

But why are children and their representatives unhappy with the proposals as they stand? Let's go back a few steps. In responses made to the UK government in 1995 and 2002, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child recommended that we should establish independent human rights institutions to monitor, protect and promote the rights enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. A lot has been achieved, including the creation of children's commissioners in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and finally England.
