Clubs should be for regular pupils only

Education
Study support sessions and after-school clubs should only be open to pupils with good attendance records, according to a report by extended schools charity ContinYou.

The Impact of Study Support on Improving Attendance and Behaviour suggests making study support available only to "those who have been at school that day or have attended a pre-determined percentage of lessons over the past month" would lead to better attendance in schools.

Vivien Janes, development manager for study support at ContinYou, said: "In my experience, youngsters will turn up on certain days because they are going off to train for football or whatever. As an informal rule, this approach can work."

The report also said after-school clubs could be a good way of working with police and youth offending teams to prevent young people becoming bored and involved in antisocial behaviour.
