High street chain USC is paying young people working on Live Futures magazine in London to produce a quarterly magazine known as Saturday. The first issue was published last week and is being distributed free in all 57 USC outlets in the UK.
Callum McCeogh, editorial director for Saturday, declined to say how much the young people were being paid. But he said it was a "fair sum" on a freelance rate.
He described the venture as "socially-responsible contract publishing".
He added: "These young people are ready to earn money but not quite prepared for the world of full-time journalism. This project provides a great stepping stone between voluntary youth work and getting their own careers off the ground."
